Abstract:Objective To investigate the correlation between N-terminal pro brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) or lipoprotein (a) [LP(a)] and severity of coronary artery disease (CAD) in elderly patients with coronary heart disease (CHD). Methods The patients (n=213) were chosen from Jan. 2011 to Dec. 2012, and then divided into non-CHD group (n=60), single-vessel disease group (n=42), 2-vessel disease group (n=48) and 3-vessel disease group (n=63) according to the outcomes of coronary angiography (CAG). The levels of fasting serum NT-proBNP and LP(a) were detected and compared in 4 groups, and the relationship between NT-proBNP or LP(a) and severity of CAD was analyzed. Results The levels of NT-proBNP and LP(a) trended to increase as the diseased vessles increased. The levels of NT-proBNP and LP(a) were higher in single-vessel disease group, 2-vessel disease group and 3-vessel disease group than that in non-CHD group (P<0.05). The difference had statistical significance in the levels of NT-proBNP and LP(a) between single-vessel disease group and 3-vessel disease group (P<0.05), and had no significance between single-vessel disease group and 2-vessel disease group, and between 2-vessel disease group and 3-vessel disease group (P>0.05). The Gensini score was positively correlated to NT-proBNP and LP(a), and correlation coefficient of NT-proBNP was 0.580 and that of LP(a) was 0.406 (P<0.01). Conclusion The levels of NT-proBNP and LP(a) are closely correlated to the severity of CAD. The patients with higher levels of NT-proBNP and LP(a) should be paid high attention to and given intensive treatment as early as possible.
