Abstract:Objective To discuss the influence of obesity on level of plasma B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) in patients with severe heart failure. Methods The patients (n=293) with grade IV heart failure of coronary heart disease (CHD) were chosen and the level of plasma BNP was detected by using ELISA. All patients were divided, according to body mass index (BMI), into obesity group (BMI>28 kg/m2, n=198) and non-obesity group (BMI<28 kg/m2, n=95), and the difference in BNP level was compared between two groups. Results There was no statistical difference in age, sex structure, LVEF, LVEDd, and complicating hypertension or type 2 diabetes between two groups (P>0.05). The level of plasma BNP was significantly lower in obesity group (623.4±405.5 pg/ml) than that in non-obesity group (948.7±607.4 pg/ml, P<0.05). The level of plasma BNP was lower in male or female obesity patients, and in patients complicating hypertension or type 2 diabetes compared with non-obesity patients (P<0.05). Conclusion The level of plasma BNP increases significantly in the patients with heart failure, but the increasing degree is lower in obesity patients than that in non-obesity patients. In clinical diagnosis and treatment the influence of obesity on BNP level should be considered.
