Prevalence and risk factors of isolated systolic hypertension in elderly people of different nationalities in Urumchi of Xinjiang

Abstract:Objective To investigate the prevalence of isolated systolic hypertension (ISH) in elderly people (aged over 60) of different nationalities in Urumchi of Xinjiang, and observe the relationship among ISH prevalence, nationality, sex and age. Methods The elderly cases (n=3416) of Han nationality, Uygur nationality and Hazakh nationality were chosen by applying cluster random sampling methods from Jan. 2010 to Dec. 2012. A cross-section survey on cardiovascular diseases was conducted and ISH prevalence was calculated in groups of different nationalities, sexes and ages. Results There were totally 2957 cases completed the survey, the response rate was 86.56%(2957/3416) and the whole ISH prevalence was 25.50%(754/2957). ISH prevalence was, respectively, 27.67%(397/1453), 25.00%(260/1040) and 20.12%(97/482) in Han group, Uygur group and Hazakh group (χ2=11.01, P<0.01). ISH prevalence was 22.89%(356/1555) in male cases and 28.39%(398/1402) in female ones (χ2=11.72, P<0.01), and it was, respectively, 21.38%(347/1643), 29.56%(295/998) and 33.33%(112/336) in cases aged from 61 to 70, cases aged from 71 to 80 and cases aged over 80 (χ2=34.01, P<0.01). Conclusion ISH prevalence has difference in nationality and sex, and will increase with ageing in Urumchi of Xinjiang.
