Advances in the treatment of drug-resistant epilepsy with cannabidiol

Abstract:There are approximately 70 million people suffering from epilepsy around the world with about 10 million epilepsy patients in China.The main treatment of epilepsy is anti-seizure medicine.Despite the continuous development of these drugs,around 30%of epilepsy patients still experience drug resistance.Cannabidiol(CBD)is a natural cannabinoid that has been found anti-epileptic properties.Clinical studies have shown that CBD is effective in treating drug-resistant epilepsy,including conditions such as Dravet syndrome,Lennox Gastaut syndrome,and tuberous sclerosis epilepsy.CBD has a wide range of action mechanism and is considered safe,thus it has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration.This article provides a summary of the pathogenesis of drug-resistant epilepsy,the efficacy,the mechanism,and safety of CBD in treating different types of drug-resistant epilepsy,aiming to provide epilepsy specialists with a reference to enhance their understanding of CBD.
