Abstract:Minipig closely resembles human in many features of anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry, thus increasingly being used as testing models in nonclinical drug safety evaluation. However, due to reasons such as background data, operations and animal sources, minipig has not been widely accepted and used in toxic testing. With advantages superior to dog, minipig has been considered to be a very good model for human and shown potential of replacing dog for drug safety evaluation, which indicating that minipig may become the most predictive animal species in the near future. This article reviewed the comparative advantages of minipig among the animal species, aimed to call for promoting utilization of minipig in domestic drug screen in early stage and preclinical evaluation in late stage of drug development.
