Policies to promote use of generic drugs in developed countries

Abstract:Objective:To provide recommendations on establishing and improving policies to promote use of generic drugs in China.Methods:By literature research and comparison,this study analyzed the policies to promote use of generic drugs in developed countries.Results:Their policy tools include supply-side measures and demand-side measures.Supply-side measures are related to market entry,pricing and reimbursement.Demand-side measures are associated mostly with incentives for physicians to prescribe,pharmacists to dispense and patients to use generic drugs.Conclusion:Governments should introduce a coherent generic drugs policy to further perfect the market entry approval process,improve the qualities,and promote the use of generic drugs,thus to reduce the burden of national and individual medical expenses.
