Abstract:Objective:To investigate the effect of portulaca oleracea polysaccharide (POP) on immunologic function in immunosuppressed mice and the possible mechanism. Methods:The immunosuppression was induced by cyclophosphamide (CTX) in mice.POP (180 and 90 mg· kg-1) and the positive control agent lentinan (100 mg·kg-1) were orally administered, respectively.Thymus and spleen indexes were determined.Proliferation of T and B lymphocytes was measured by MTT assay.IL-2,IL-4,IL-10,and IFN-γ in the serum were measured by ELISA.Results:POP enhanced the activity of NK and LAK cells, and significantly increased the levels of IL-2,IL-4,IL-10,and IFN-γ in serum. It also increased the index of thymus and spleen. Conclusion:POP improves immunosuppression and myelosuppression caused by CTX in mice, thus may alleviate the side effects of chemotherapy. This effect may be an improtant antitumor mechanism of POP.
