Abstract:Objective:To investigate the antitussive, expectorant and anti-inflammatory effects of butylphthalide in mice. Methods:Mice were divided into butylphthalide (0.2,0.1,0.05 g·kg-1) and control groups.Cough latent period and cough times, phenol red secretion, swelling degree of ear and foot, and the levels of total protein and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in synovitis of exudates were measured. Results:Butylphthalide at a dose of 0.2 g·kg-1 could prolong cough latent period, reduce cough times, promote the secretion of phenol red and depress the levels of TNF-α in synovitis of exudates (P < 0.05).Butylphthalide could depress the swelling degree of ear at the doses of 0.1 and 0.2 g· kg-1,depress the swelling degree of foot and the levels of total protein in synovitis of exudates at the doses of 0.05,0.1 and 0.2 g· kg-1 and decrease the level of TNF-α in synovitis of exudates at the dose of 0.2 g· kg-1 (p < 0.05,P < 0.01).Conclusion:Butylphthalide has good antiinflammatory effect and certain antitussive and expectorant effects. The anti-inflammatory effect of butylphthalide may be one of its mechanisms of antitussive and expectorant effects.
