The status and prospect of research and development of drug combinations

Abstract：This article summarized the global conditions of research and development (R&D) of drug combinations,especially of those in the treatment of cardiovascular disease,diabetes mellitus,and AIDS.The principle of development of drug combinations was summarized.For instance,a single drug will not solve all problems in a complex disease.Some combination products were derived from commonly used drug combination in clinic.A few drug combinations were of perfect matching in "more synergism plus less toxicity",etc.Thus,it can be generalized that drug combinations were characteristic of meeting clinical needs and solving practical problems.Three typical clinical trials were presented to explain the importance of evidence-based medical research in promoting the clinical values of drug combinations.Finally,the world development trend of drug combinations was looked into and its inspiration for Chinese pharmaceutical industry was discussed.
