Abstract:Objective; To study the anti-inflammatory and antipyretic effect of a new Houttuynia Cordata injection (NYI) and the mechanisms in comparison with the original Houttuynia Cordata injection(OYI). Meth ods; To evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect, ear swelling was induced by dimethyl benzene, and the increased peritoneal capillary permeability was induced by acetic acid in mice. To evaluate the antipyretic effect, rectal tem perature was monitored in rats with yeast liquid-induced fever and in rabbits with E. coli endotoxin ( LPS) -induced fever. Results: The NYI and the OYI significantly inhibited the ear swelling and peritoneal effusion of Evans blue in mice(P <0.05 vs control). The OYI and high doses of NYI decreased the rectal temperature in rats(P <0. 05 vs control) and in rabbits. Both injections significantly reduced the contents of serum TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-8 and PGE_2(P <0.05). Conclusion; NYI has an obvious anti-inflammatory and antipyretic effect as similar to the same dose of the OYI. NYI can inhibit serum TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-8 and PGE_2, which may be one of the mechanisms.
