Mechanisms of long-acting injectable risperidone and its clinical application

Abstract：Long-acting injectable reisperidone(LAIR) is the first depot formulation of atypical antipsychotic agents.With the advanced technique of Medisorb(microsphere),it reduces the first-pass metabolism and increases bioavailability,which can decrease the individual differences in absorption and metabolism.Its steadily releasing property allows a sustained plasma steady-state concentration,so a missed injection does not result in abrupt cessation of efficacy.Due to its assured efficacy,fewer side effects and high safety,patients are well-tolerated to the drug.Besides,the drug also shows an optimal cost-effectiveness ratio.This review discussed the latest researches in the pharmacokinetics,pharmacodynamics,clinical efficacy,safety and economic benefits of LAIR.
