Progress in research of ethosomes: one new transdermal drug delivery carrier

Abstract：As a new transdermal drug delivery carrier, ethosome is one type of liposome with high deform-ability and high encapsulation efficiency, and it can penetrate skin completely. Compared with the traditional liposomes, ethosomes significantly increase the penetration rate, which would be more effective for delivery of mole-cules into the various layers of the skin and even into the blood circulation. Furthermore, they can also provide effective intracellular transmission for molecules. Ethosomes are innovative carriers that meet the essential criteria for efficient and safe administration of lipophilic or hydrophilic drugs. They have been developed rapidly in recent years. This paper reviewed the progress of ethosomes designed to deliver drugs non-invasively through the skin bar-tier, and discussed the penetrating mechanism, characteristics and applications of ethosomes. The ethosomes will carry out new tendency within transdermal delivery systems with itself character.
