Abstract:Objective: To compare thc cfficacy of tropisetron and ondansetron in prevcnting postoperative nausca and vomiting(PONV) after gynecological laparoscopy.Methods:142 patients scheduled for gynecological laparoscopy were randomLy allocated to receive 8 mg ondansetron (Group On,n=48), 5 mg tropisetron (Group Tr,n=48), Or pacebo(Group C, n=46). Anesthesia was induced with propofol and remifentanil, intubation was facilitated With rocuronium and maintained with sevoflurane and 50% N_2O. The frequency of nausea, vomiting and need for rescue antiemetic drugs were recorded for 24 h postoperatively. Results:The incidence of vomiting was significantly lower in group On(19%)at 6 h postoperatively compared to group C(37%)(P<0.05).Group.Tr showed a lower frequency of vomiting at 6 h postoperatively compared to group C, although this differenc fail to reach statistical significanCe. At 24 h Group Tr(10%) showed a lower frequency of vomiting compared to group C (33%)and group On(29%)(P<0.05).The incidence of nausea was similar in the three groups. The proportion of paticnts rcquiring rescue antiemetic medication did not differ significantly among three groups(28%,13%,13% for group C,On and Tr reSpeCtively). Conclusion: Both tropisetron and ondansetron had significant antiemetic effi-eacy in patients undergoing gynecological iaparoscopy, while tropisetron showed a lower frequency of vomiting at 6~24 h postoperatively because of a longer half-time.
