Clinical efficacy and carry-over effect of diacerein in treating knee osteoarthritis

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of 12-weeks treatment with diacerein in patients with knee osteoarthritis, and the carry-over effect 8 weeks after treatment. Methods: Patients with knee osteoarthritis (n = 50) were treated with diacerein for 12 weeks,and then followed up for 8 weeks after termination of treatment. Results:WOMAC scores were significantly improved after 12 weeks of treatment (P<0.05). Remarkable carry-over effects were observed in 4 weeks and 8 weeks after termination of treatment. No severe side effects were observed. Conclusion: Diacerein is effective and safe in treating knee osteoarthritis, and shows a remarked long-term carry-over effect.
