Prorenin and prorenin receptor:new members of renin angiotensin system

Abstract：For many years,prorenin was simply considered as inactive precursor of renin. However, some findings recently implicated that prorenin had functions after all. The discovery of prorenin receptor is attracting more attention on renin and prorenin. Prorenin receptor is expressed in heart, kidney and various cells. Both of renin and prorenin are able to bind to this receptor. In heart, kidney, blood vessels and many other tissues, prorenin binding with prorenin receptor will result in series of biological effects, including angiotensin-dependent and angio-tensin-independent effects. The prorenin receptor, which may be a potential drug target, is of great importance in drug discovery. This review will discuss the prorenin, prorenin receptor and their functions.
