Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the therapeutic effect of Chaihu Taoran Tang (CTT) on the AIMS scores in patients with tardive dyskinesia (TD) and the possible mechanisms. Methods: Eligible patients were ran-domized to receive the CTT or placebo in a double-blinded study lasting 12 weeks. The therapeutic effects were as-sessed by using abnormal involuntary movement scale (AIMS). The mechanism was investigated by comparing the activities of plasma superoxide dismutase (SOD) , catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (Gpx) as well as maleie dialdehyde (MDA) level before and after the treatment. Results:CTl effectively reduced the severity of dys-kinesia; the AIMS scores decreased over 50% in 15 patients while only 2 patients got worse in CTT group. CTT in-21.7) to (123.1 ±29.6) xl03 U'L-~] and CAT[from (1.6 +1.5) to (3.1 ~2.4) xl03 U.L-'], and de-creased the level of MDA [from baseline (14.1 ~ 7.8) to (9.4 _+ 4.7) mmol. L- '] significantly (P < 0.05). Con-clusion :CTT, a prescription of traditional Chinese Medicine, is markedly effective in reducing the severity of dyski-nesia in TD patients, and the oxidative damage might be pathophysiological key factor of TD.
