Abstract:Objective:To evaluate the safety and efficacy of leflunomide(LEF)in comparison with methotrexate(MTX)in treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA).Methods:160 patients with active RA were equally divided to receive 20 mg daily LEF or 15 mg weekly MTX for 24 weeks and their efficacy and adverse events were observed. Results:The effective rate and significantly effective rate for LEF group were 81.54% and 36.92% respectively and for MTX group were 75.81% and 35.48% respectively with no significant difference between groups. The incidence of adverse events for LEF and MTX groups were 15.39% and 26.47% respectively, also no significant difference. Conclusion:LEF is an effective agent for treatment of RA with better tolerability.
