Abstract:Objective:To study the modulating effect of Yunnanbaiyao on inflammatory cells in sputum from patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in stable phase. Methods:The single blind study was conducted in 60 patients with COPD (chronic obstructive plumonary disease)in stable phase. They were assigned equally to active or control groups. Before and after treatment, the inflammatory cell counts in induced sputum, they including neutrophils and eosinophils, cytokins, and interlukins-8 (IL-8),was determined by CLIA (chemiluminescence immunoassay),and ratio of the actural value of FEV1 (forced expiratory volume at 1s) and the predicated value of FEV1,PLT(platlet count),PPT(plasma prothombin time),and PF(plasma fibrinogen) were also measured. Results:After treatment, there were significant decrease in inflammatory cell count and IL-8 level(P<0.01);significant improvement in FEV1 ratio(P<0.05);and no significant difference in PLT and PF.The PPT was shortened(P>0.05).Conclusion:The airway inflammation of COPD patients in stable phase was related to increase in neutrophils and IL-8,which can be modulated by Yunnanbaiyao. Therefore,Yunanbaiyao is a valuable agent for COPD treatment.
