Abstract:Atherosclerosis(AS)is the significant etiology for cardiovascular diseases, including coronary heart disease, heart failure and stroke.Ferroptosis,an iron-dependent form of cell death,is marked by the buildup of lipid peroxides due to iron deposition.Current evidence indicates that intracellular iron imbalances can harm macrophages, vascular smooth muscle cells and endothelial cells, thereby influencing various stages of the AS pathological cascade, such as immune inflammation, oxidative stress and lipid metabolism. The article comprehensively discusses the pathological progression of AS,the mechanisms behind ferroptosis and the pivotal role of ferroptosis in AS.Additionally,it explores the emerging connections between ferroptosis and AS,aiming to offer novel insights for future AS treatments and establish a solid theoretical foundation for research on inhibiting ferroptosis for anti-AS purposes.
