Abstract:Objective To explore the characteristics of atrial fibrillation(AF)and its associated risk factors in the young and middle-aged adults. Methods Using a cross-sectional study design, the young and middle-aged individuals(age<60 years)who underwent health examinations at Kailuan group from June 2006 to December 2018 were selected.A 1∶4 matching ratio was applied to match AF patients with non-AF patients during the same period, resulting in 710 AF patients matched with 2840 non-AF patients, with a total of 3550 participants included in this study.Statistical analysis was conducted to investigate the characteristics and risk factors of AF in this population. Results Compared with the non-AF group, the AF group showed statistically significant differences in levels of fasting blood glucose(FBG),diastolic blood pressure(DBP),body mass index(BMI),total cholesterol(TC)and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein(Hs-CRP),as well as in the proportions of hypertension history, diabetes history and cardiovascular disease(CVD)(P<0.05).The AF group had higher levels of FBG,DBP,BMI and Hs-CRP,and also a higher proportion of hypertension history, diabetes history and CVD[(6.14±2.26)mmol/L vs.(5.88±1.98)mmol/L,(85.52±12.56)mmHg vs.(84.43±11.40)mmHg,(25.78±3.66)kg/m2 vs.(25.18±3.29)kg/m2,1.24(0.50,3.40)mg/L vs.1.10(0.40,2.91)mg/L,58.03%vs.45.49%,18.45%vs.11.83%,10.85%vs.7.18%],but a lower TC level compared with the non-AF group[(4.71±1.39)mmol/L vs.(4.98±1.29)mmol/L].Multivariate conditional Logistic regression analysis revealed that BMI(OR=1.05,95%CI 1.02-1.09),history of hypertension(OR=1.44,95%CI 1.15-1.80),Hs-CRP(OR=1.02,95%CI 1.01-1.04)and diabetes(OR=1.58,95%CI 1.05-2.36)were the risk factors for AF(P<0.05).TC(OR=0.82,95%CI 0.75-0.89)was a protective factor against AF(P<0.05).Conclusions High BMI,history of hypertension, diabetes history and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein are the independent risk factors for AF,while TC was found to be a protective factor against AF in this demographic.
