Abstract:Atrial fibrillation is one of the common cardiac arrhythmia in the world, which has a high level of mortality and morbidity. It is well known that mitochondria play a central role in cardiomyocyte as they produce energy to support the mechanical and electrical function of the heart. When myocardial mitochondrial metabolism is disrupted, resulting in insufficient ATP production and excessive reactive oxygen(ROS),thereby disrupting Ca2+homeostasis and membrane excitability then, and leading to atrial fibrillation finally.Details on the molecular mechanisms underlying mitochondrial energy metabolism disorder are increasingly being uncovered have shown that mitochondrial energy metabolism disorder is a contributing factor in AF.Considering the high prevalence of AF,investigating the role of mitochondrial impairment in AF may guide the path towards the new therapeutic and diagnostic targets. In this review, the latest evidence on the role of mitochondrial energy metabolism disorder in AF is presented.
