Abstract:β-hydroxybutyrate is the main component of ketone bodies, which is produced in the liver and metabolized by extrahepatic tissues. The heart is an important organ that consumes ketone bodies, and under some pathological conditions, ketone body oxidation contributes more than 20%of the energy required by the heart. In recent years, the role of β-hydroxybutyrate in cardiovascular diseases has become a research hotspot.Since it is not only an energy substrate, but also serves as a signaling molecule to regulate cell metabolism,inflammation,cell-to-cell interactions and bioenergy, which enables it to play a complex and diverse role in different cardiovascular diseases. This article reviews the research results of β-hydroxybutyrate in heart failure, pathological cardiac hypertrophy, diabetic myocardial injury, myocardial ischemia and reperfusion injury, atrial fibrillation, hypertension, atherosclerosis and calcification to provide a basis for β-hydroxybutyrate to become a new intervention target of cardiovascular diseases.
