Abstract:Objective To explore the effect of elevated blood pressure on survival time in the middle-aged Chinese adults based on a prospective cohort study. Methods From 1982 to 1985,a cardiovascular risk factor survey was conducted on 10 groups of subjects aged 35 to 59 across China and the death outcomes were followed up.Elevated blood pressure was defined as systolic blood pressure exceeding 115 mmHg.The area under survival curve method was used to calculate the average survival time of people with and without elevated blood pressure. Results A total of 24096 study subjects were included in the analysis, including 12161 males and 11935 females, with an average follow-up of 19.7 years.Compared with those without elevated blood pressure, the subjects with elevated blood pressure had a 0.50-year reduction in survival time in the total population,a 0.46-year reduction in the male population,a 0.94-year reduction in the female population,a 0.63-year reduction in the urban population,a 0.61-year reduction in the rural population,a 0.27-year reduction in the 35-44-year-old population,a 0.50-year reduction in the 45-54-year-old population and a 0.67-year reduction in the 55-year-old and older population. Conclusion The impact of elevated blood pressure on the survival time of middle-aged Chinese adults is greater for women than men,and greater for those lived in the urban areas than those in the rural areas;and the older the age,the greater the impact.
