Abstract:Postoperative atrial fibrillation(POAF)is one of the common complications after cardiac surgery, which can significantly prolong the time of hospital-stay and increase medical cost and the risk of adverse events. The mechanism of POAF is still unclear. It may be related with many factors, among which epicardial adipose tissue plays an important role in the developing process. At present, there are few summaries regarding epicardial adipose tissue and atrial fibrillation after cardiac surgery. This article aims to review studies on epicardial adipose tissue from the anatomy, pathophysiology, potential mechanisms related to the occurrence of POAF and relevant prevention measures, and the prospect on the future development to provide certain references for new intervention targets in the future.
