Effect of the growth vigor and florescence of rootstock on growth of grafted watermelon

Abstract：In order to study the influence of growth vigor and florescence of rootstock on the grafted watermelon,two bottle gourds (‘A 10’ and ‘A26’) samples with significantly difference on growth vigor and florescence and 2 squashes (‘Z7’ and ‘Z10’) samples were used as rootstocks,‘Zaojia’ (8424) was applied as scion and the no-grafted ‘Zaojia’ (8424) seedlings were took as control in this research,the stem length and the date of flowering of these treatments were measured.The results showed that the growth vigor of watermelon could be increased by grafting,which could be increased by 84.68％.The stronger rootstock growth vigor was,the stronger grafted watermelon was.The bloom time of grafted watermelon could be delayed by 0 to 4 days when grafted.The earlier bloom time of rootstock was,the earlier bloom time of grafted watermelon was.The larger differences of the florescence and growth vigor between the rootstocks were,the larger differences of which between the grafted watermelon plants were.This result provide a directive value for rootstock selection and breeding in watermelon grafting.
