Breeding of new seedless watermelon cultivar'Lühu'

Abstract：'Lühu'is a new mid-small fruit type seedless watermelon cultivar bred by crossing tetraploid line'Quanyu 4HMR-3'as female parent with diploid line'DOCTOR-37'as male parent.Its plant grows vigorously,and takes about 100 days from planting to harvest.This cultivar is characterized by its round fruit with a shape index of 1.0,green exocarp with blackish green stripes,smooth skin without edge groove;red fruit flesh with about 12.5％-13.5％ and 8.5％ of center and side soluble solids content,and the fruit flesh with very few fiber content nor seed traces,tastes very delicious.The fruit developing period is about 30 days from female flower blooming.The first primary female flower on the main vine appears in the 5-8 th node,and followed by female flower every other 4-5 nodes.The cultivar sets fruit easily and trimly.The fruit has about 1.0 cm pericarp thickness,good store and transport properties,95％ of marketable rate and displays very good shelf life because of its firm and strong pericarp.'Lühu'has strong adversity resistance,and its average fruit weight is about 3.0-4.0 kg,the per 667 m2 yield is about 2 000 kg.The variety is adaptable and can be cultivated in most areas of the country.
