Abstract:In this study, the genetic diversity of 167 watermelon germplasms, which were collected from different regions all over the world, were revealed by morphological markers and SSR markers, respectively.Twenty nine watermelon morphological characters were investigated and their Shannon information indexes (Ⅰ) were ranged from 0.54 to 2.03 with a mean of 1.50.The mean values for quality characters and quantitative characters were 1.16,and 1.71,respectively.The range of variation coefficient was from 16.43% to 90.73%,and the average variation coefficient was 34.12%.Furthermore,22 SSR markers were selected for genetic diversity analysis in 167 watermelon materials. The average alleles detected for each primer was 4.86.The average number of alleles (Ne) was 2.20.The average Shannon's information index (Ⅰ) for each primer was 0.94.The average observed heterozygosity (Ho) and expected heterozygosity (He) for each primer were 0.27 and 0.52,respectively.The average polymorphism information content (PIC) was 0.45.The results of phylogenetic analysis revealed that compared to morphological markers,SSR markers are more reliable and more suitable for being used in genetic diversity analysis.
