Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to study the effects of planting density on watermelon fruit weight, yield and quality in open field.'Xuefeng Huapiwuzi' was used as the experimental material,4 planting densities (S1:150 plants per 667 m2,S2:200 plants per 667 m2,S3:300 plants per 667 m2 and S4:450 plants per 667 m2 (CK)) were set in this research, the single fruit weight, yield and quality of each treatments with leafy shoots retained were compared. The results showed that there were some differences in the weight and yield of watermelon under the 4 planting densities. The single fruit weight was increased with the planting density decreasing, the single fruit weight of S 1 was significantly higher than other treatments. The yield was first increased and then decreased with the increase of planting density, yield of S2 was the highest, which was significantly higher than that of S1 and S4 (CK).The soluble solid content was found no significant difference among different treatments. In conclusion, the best planting density of seedless watermelon under simplified cultivation was 200 plants per 667 m2,in such condition, the yield increased by 14.68%,investment cost decreased by 4 500 yuan per hectare and income increased by 12 150.36 yuan per hectare, and the overall yield and economic benefit were highest.
