Abstract:The objective of this experiment is to explore the best way of pruning of ‘ Xinong No.8’ watermelon variety in Ningxia irrigation area. The main variety of watermelon ‘Xinong No.8’ used as experimental material, four pruning methods (double vine pruning, three vine pruning, four vine pruning and no pruning) were adopted as four treatments. The earliest yield and total yield in the whole period of watermelon was the highest using double vine pruning and there was highly significant difference compared with other pruning methods. The total yield (3 159.67 kg per 667 m2) was the highest using three vine pruning, and was significantly different from other pruning methods. The total yield of control was superior to two vine and four vine pruning (P<0.01,statistically highly significant). There was no significant difference between four vine pruning and two vine pruning.Three vine pruning treatment was the best for watermelon cultivation of ‘Xinong No.8’ in Ningxia irrigation area.
