The Hazards of Bony Compression of Cervical Vessels
Abstract:Compression or injury of the vascular structures (carotid artery, jugular vein) in the craniocervical junction and cervical skeletal structures is a potential cause of ischemic stroke in both the anterior and posterior circulation, and may also be the main cause of symptoms such as dizziness, tinnitus, brain noise, or postoperative bleeding in some patients undergoing cranial surgery [1]. The structures that may cause compression or injury to the cranio-cervical vessels mainly include elongated styloid processes, calcification of the stylohyoid ligament, osteophytes, transverse processes of the atlas, and neck muscles and ligaments [2-3]. Since many anatomical abnormalities of the bony structures in the neck exist in the general population but often do not have typical symptoms, this abnormal anatomy is often neglected.
