The relationship of parathyroid hormone and interleukin-6 to prognosis in elderly patients with acute ischemic stroke

Abstract：Objectives To analyze the relationship between the expression levels of parathyroid hormone(PTH)and interleukin-6(IL-6)and prognosis in elderly patients with acute ischemic stroke(AIS).Methods The clinical data of 120 patients with AIS were analyzed retrospectively and another 60 healthy individuals who underwent physical examinations during the same period were selected as the control group.The serum levels of PTH and IL-6 were compared between the two groups.The National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale(NIHSS)was used to evaluate the neurological deficit of AIS patients,and they were divided into mild group(n=42),moderate group(n=46)and severe group(n=32),and the correlation between serum PTH and IL-6 levels and NIHSS score,as well as the correlation between serum PTH and IL-6,were analyzed.The modified Rankin scale(mRS)was used to evaluate the prognosis of AIS patients 3 months after the onset of the disease,and the receiver operating characteristic(ROC)curve was plotted to analyze the predictive value of serum PTH and IL-6 for the poor prognosis in AIS patients.Results The serum levels of PTH and IL-6 in the AIS group were higher than those in the control group(P<0.05).Comparing the serum levels of PTH and IL-6 in AIS patients with different neurological deficits,the mild group<the moderate group<the severe group(P<0.05);there was a positive correlation between serum PTH,IL-6 levels,and NIHSS scores(r=0.359,0.401,all P<0.05).The areas under the ROC curve(AUC)for predicting poor prognosis in AIS patients using serum PTH,IL-6 levels,and combined detection were all>0.60,with the combination showing better performance.Conclusions The levels of PTH and IL-6 in elderly patients with AIS are significantly increased,and are positively correlated with neurological impairment,and the combination of the two can predict the prognosis of patients.
