Abstract:Objective To explore the indications, surgical technique and peroperative managements of carotid endarterectomy (CEA). Methods Clinical data of 40 patients with carotid atherosclerotic stenosis undergoing CEA were analyzed retrospectively, including transient ischemic attack (TIA) in 30 patients and cerebral infarction in 10. All the patients had dizziness and headache before surgery and were followed up after surgery. Results The recanalization rate of blood flow in the carotid artery was 100%after CEA. The mean operation time was 93.4 ± 20.5 min, mean carotid occlusion time was 22 ± 6.2 min, and mean hospital stay was 10 ± 3.9 d. Dizziness and headache disappeared in 30 patients and the other patients obtained relief of symptoms after CEA. Forty patients were followed up for 2 to 18 months. Carotid artery restenosis appeared in 1 patient 6 months after the operation, and contralateral small-area cerebral infarction appeared in 2 patients 12 months after the operation. Conclusions CEA is a simple and safe treatment for carotid artery atherosclerotic stenosis. Postoperative complications could be reduced by fine operation and reasonable use of flow pipe and patch during surgery.
