Occipital craniotomy through transtentorial approach for thalamic tumor resection

Abstract:Objective To investigate the indications,advantages and limitations of occipital craniotomy through transtentorial approach for thalamus tumors.Methods The clinical data of 16 patients undergoing resection of thalamic tumors via the occipital transtentorial approach were analyzed retrospectively.The tumor was resected through the posteroinferior space of the vein of Galen in 12 cases,combined para corpus callosotomy in 3 and corpus callosotomy through midline in 1.Results Total resection of tumor was achieved in 12 cases,subtotal resection in 1 and partial resection in 3.There was 1 perioperative death and 1 mild hemiplegia.Conclusions The occipital craniotomy through transtentorial approach is suitable for resection of the posteroinferior tumor of the thalamus,with the advantages of accurate positioning and small damage.
