Abstract:Objective To explore the clinical features of adenoid cystic carcinoma with the skull base invasion. Methods The clinical data of 18 patients with adenoid cystic carcinoma with skull base invasion were analyzed retrospectively. All the patients were followed up by telephone and outpatient.Overall survival and progression-free survival was calculated by the Kaplan-Meier curve. Results Death occurred in 9 patients, local recurrence in 9 and distant metastasis in 5 among 18 patients during follow-up.Median time of overall survival and progression-free survival was 57.0 months and 23.3 months respectively. In the newly diagnosed cases, patients with postoperative adjuvant radiotherapy owned significantly longer local recurrence and distant metastasis time than those without radiotherapy. Conclusions Adenoid cystic carcinoma with the skull base invasion is rare. The best therapeutic regimen is radical surgery followed by radiation therapy. However,it is difficult to make choice of treatment due to the complicated treatment history of recurrent cases.Patients with adenoid cystic carcinoma with the skull base invasion has poor prognosis with relatively high local recurrence and distance metastasis rate.
