Abstract:Obiective To explore the surgical methods and outcome of transsphenoidal surgery for nonfunctioning pituitary adenomas in elderly patients. Methods Clinical data of 123 elderly patients with nonfunctioning pituitary adenomas were analyzed retrospectively, who underwent microsurgery via transsphenoidal approach. There were microadenomas in 2 patients, large adenomas in 74 and giant adenomas in 47. Results Total tumor removal was achieved in 91 patients, subtotal in 30 and partial in 2. Ninety-five patients were followed up for 15 to 61 months. Relapse occurred in 7 patients, 3 of them received second surgery and 4 received observation. Conclusion Based on preoperative complete evaluation, transsphenoidal surgery for nonfunctioning pituitary adenomas in elderly patients is feasible and effective.
