Abstract:Objective To explore the expression level and clinical significance of plasma vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in ischemic stroke and its several subtypes. Methods One hundred and seventy-one patients with ischemic stroke were selected as stroke group, which were divided into four subtypes including atherothrombotic infarction (ATBI, n=34), small artery disease (SAD, n=45), cardioembolic infarction (CE, n=49) and other types (OT, n=43). Healthy subjects were age-and gender-matched with stroke group and served as control group (n=171). Plasma VEGF level was measured by ELISA 1 d, 3 d, 7 d, 14 d, 90 d after stroke and analyzed. Results Compared with control group, the expressions of plasma VEGF in stroke group were higher 1 d after stroke and lasted to 90 d after stroke (P<0.05). The expressions of plasma VEGF in ATBI, CE, SAD and OT were obviously higher (P<0.05). The VEGF level was positively correlated with NIHSS in CE patients (r=0.843, P<0.05). Compared with plasma VEGF of patients with good outcome 90 d after stroke, the plasma VEGF of patients with bad outcome significantly increased in the stroke group, SAD and CE subtypes (P<0.05), but significantly decreased in ATBI subtype (P<0.05) and remained unchanged in OT subtype (P>0.05). Conclusion The expression of plasma VEGF would increase in all subtypes of ischemic stroke. The plasma VEGF level has different correlations with prognosis of all subtypes.
