Abstract:Objective To compare the efficacy of two methods for closing the frontal sinus (FS) in craniotomy. Methods Clinical data of 189 patients with opened FS in craniotomy were analyzed retrospectively. The patients were divided into two groups. The standard method was used to close the opened FS in 85 patients of control group and autologous pedicle periosteum for 104 patients in observation group. The incidences of intracranial infection, frontal sinusitis and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage were compared to evaluate the effect of two methods. Results The incidences of intracranial infection and frontal sinusitis were 1.92% and 2.88%respectively in observation group, which were significantly lower than those in control group (12.94%, 11.76%). The differences in intracranial infection and frontal sinusitis between the two groups were statistically significant (P=0.003, 0.016). The incidence of CSF leakage was 2.35%in control group and 0 in observation group. There was no difference in CSF leakage between the two groups (P=0.201). Conclusion It is a quick, effective and reliable method to close the opened FS with autologous pedicle periosteum in craniotomy.
