Abstract:Objective To analyze the clinical and pathological features of pediatric meningioma in order to improve the understanding of pediatric meningiomas. Methods Clinical data of 29 meningioma patients aged equal to or less than 18 years were analyzed retrospectively. The pathological classification and diagnosis were comfired according to the 2007 WHO classification of tumors of the central nervous system. The expression of Ki-67 and progestogen receptor (PR) in pediatric meningioma was also detected by immunohistochemistry. Results There were 10 pathological types in this study including 22 patients in benign group (WHO gradeⅠ) and 7 in non-benign group (WHO gradesIIandⅢ). There were no significant differences in gender rate between the two groups (P>0.05). The positive PR expression was detected in 28.6%(2/7) patients of non-benign group and 77.3%(16/22) of benign group. There was no statistically difference in PR expression between the two groups (P=0.071). The Ki-67 proliferative index was (17.11±7.11)%in non-benign group and (3.96±4.28)%in benign group. There was statistical difference in Ki-67 proliferative index between the two groups (P=0.002). Total resection (Simpson gradeⅠtoⅢ) was achieved in 26 patients and subtotal resection (Simpson gradeⅣ) in 3. Eighteen patients were followed up for 1 to 5 years. Replase occurred in 6 patients and 1 died. Conclusions There are differences in gender ratio, pathological type and immunohistochemistry between child and adult meningiomas. Thorough understanding of the characteristics of pediatric meningioma is helpful in improving the treatment of pediatric meningioma.
