Abstract:Objective To explore the effectiveness of embolization in treating non-galenic cerebral arteriovenous fistulas (NCAVF). Methods The clinical data of 8 patients with NCAVF undergoing embolization using Onyx and coils were analyzed retrospectively. There was a single fistula in 7 patients and multiple fistula in 1. Coil embolization alone was performed in 3 patients and coil-assisted Onyx in 5. Results The immediate DSA after embolization showed that complete occlusion of NCAVF was achieved in 6 patients, near complete occlusion in 1 and achieved complete occlusion after staged occlusion in 1. All symptoms resolved after embolization. No patient recurred during the follow-up period from 3 to 24 months. Conclusions Coil embolization alone or coil-assisted Onyx is a feasible for patients with NCAVF, with good efficacy. The coil can reduce the velocity of blood flow and helps to embolize the fistula with Onyx in patients with high-flow NCAVF.
