Abstract:Objective To investigate the diagnosis and treatment of intracranial melanocytoma. Methods Clinical data of 7 patients with intracranial melanocytoma were analyzed retrospectively. The tumors were removed by surgery via frontal-temporal, temporal-occipital, parietal-occipital, far lateral and posterior midline approach. Results Total resection was achieved in 5 patients and subtotal in 2. The postoperative pathological diagnosis was melanocytoma in all the patients. There was no death in surgery and no new neurological deficit after surgery. Chemoradiotherapy was performed in 3 patients and radiotherapy in 2. All the patients were followed up for 3 to 18 months, 3 remained alive and 3 died of recurrence or metastasis. One patient was lost to follow-up. Conclusions The incidence rate of intracranial melanocytoma is low and the misdiagnosis rate is high with poor prognosis. The surgical resection is the main method for melanocytoma, combined with radiotherapy or gamma knife treatment.
