Abstract:Objective To investigate the expression and its significance of androgen receptor (AR) in different grade human gliomas. Methods Seventy-third glioma tumor samples and 12 normal brain samples were collected, including WHO grade Ⅰ in 8 patients, gradeⅡ in 15, grade Ⅲ in 23 and grade Ⅳ in 27. The expression of AR protein was detected by immunohistochemistry, and AR mRNA by quantitative real-time PCR. The differences in the expression of AR protein and mRNA between normal brain and different grade gliomas were analyzed. Results The positivity rate of AR protein and expression of AR mRNA in glioma tissues of different grades were significantly higher than those in normal brain tissues (all P < 0.05). The WHO classification of glioma was positively related to rate of AR-positive cells (rs = 0.584, P < 0.001). The WHO classification of glioma was also positively related to expression of AR mRNA (rs=0.885, P < 0.001). Conclusions The expression of AR increases in glioma and the expression level of AR is related to the pathological grades of glioma, which suggests that AR may play a critical role in the biological behaviors of gliomas.
