Translational medicine in cardiopulmonary bypass:opportunities, difficulties and pathways
Abstract:Extracorporeal circulation has driven the development of modern cardiovascular surgery with its powerful life support function. In China alone, there are as many as 200,000 heart surgeries performed under extracorporeal circulation per year [1]. However, due to the significant disturbance of extracorporeal circulation on blood physiology and circulatory physiology, the incidence of postoperative complications is significantly higher than that of other surgeries. Although efforts over several generations have greatly reduced these complications, heart failure, acute kidney injury, and lung injury still occur at rates of 3.7% to 25% [2-4], and the transfusion rate is nearly 50% [5-7]. This has become a major factor limiting the development of extracorporeal circulation, but also provides opportunities for related translational research.
