Abstract:Objective To investigate factors influencing centrifugal pump efficiency in closed extracorporeal circulation model and to compare pump efficiency between MAQUET ROTAFLOW and SORIN Revolution 5. Methods Centrifugal pump speed, pump flow, flow/speed ratio, inlet and outlet pressure were recorded under different afterload and preload conditions with an in vitro saline closed extracorporeal circulation system model. The correlation curves between these variables were plotted. Results Centrifugal flow had a significant positive linear correlation with pump speed. Compared with Revolution 5, ROTAFLOW had a lower pump flow/speed ratio. Centrifugal pump flow and flow/speed ratio were inversely correlated with both inlet negative pressure and outlet pressure at any fixed pump speed. Conclusion Centrifugal pump efficiency is determined by pump design, pump speed, inlet and outlet pressure. Revolution 5 has better efficiency than ROTAFLOW.
