Abstract:Objective? To compare the routine blood test results of IDA and TT in order to provide evidence for clinical differential diagnosis. Methods A total of 186 patients with small cell hypochromic anemia admitted to our hospital from January 2011 to May 2018 were retrospectively collected. They were divided into IDA group (108 cases) and TT group (78 cases). The results of routine blood examination, bone marrow and peripheral blood smears were compared between the two groups. Results There were significant differences in RBC, Hb, MCV, MCHC and RDW levels between the two groups (P<0.05), but there was no significant difference in MCH levels (P>0.05). Target cells were rare or not seen on peripheral blood and bone marrow smears in IDA group, but more in TT group. Extracellular and intracellular iron staining of bone marrow reduced or lacked in IDA group, but increased in TT group. Conclusion It is difficult to differentiate IDA from TT in clinical diagnosis. It is necessary to combine various laboratory examinations to make a definite diagnosis.
