Abstract:Objective? To investigate the efficacy of autologous limbal stem cell conjunctival transplantation combined with pterygium excision in the treatment of primary pterygium. Methods Ninety-three patients (95 eyes) with primary pterygium admitted to our hospital from January to December 2017 were randomly divided into observation group (n=47 patients, 48 eyes) with pterygium excision combined with autologous limbal stem cells plus conjunctiva transplantation, and control group (n=46 patients, 47 eyes) underwent pterygium resection. The patients were followed up for 1 day, 3 days, 1 week, 2 weeks, and 12 months. The recovery time of corneal epithelium and the recurrence rate of pterygium were recorded in all patients. Results The corneal epithelial repair time was (4.6±0.4)d in the observation group and (7.8±1.1)d in the control group. The recurrence rate was 2.1% (one eye recurrence) in the observation group, which was significantly lower than 20.51% in the control group (8 eyes recurrence) (P<0.05). Conclusion Autologous limbal stem cell plus conjunctival transplantation combined with pterygium resection is beneficial to the recovery of postoperative corneal epithelium, and the recurrence rate is low, which is worthy of promotion.
