Outcome Analysis of Electronic Colonoscopy in Elderly

Abstract:Objective To analyze the results of electronic colonoscopy in the elderly patients.Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted for 407 patients aged over 80 who underwent electronic colonoscopy in Jinqiu Hospital of Liaoning Province from 2008 to 2017.Results A total of 407 patients,374 completed electronic colonoscopy and the completion rate was 91.89%.Disease detection: 161 cases of colonic polyps(39.56%),57 cases of colorectal cancer(14.00%),35 cases of melanosis of colon(8.60%),6 cases of ischemic bowel disease(1.47%) and 5 cases of ulcerative colitis(1.23%).The detection rate of colonic polyps and colon cancer in males were higher than that in females.No complications occurred during the examination and treatment.Conclusion More than 90.0% of the elderly can complete electronic colonoscopy.The detection rate of colonic polyps is higher than other colorectal diseases,followed by colorectal malignancies and melanosis.The detection rate of colonic polyps and colon cancer in males were higher than that in females.For the elderly,it is suggested that regular colonoscopy should be performed when conditions permit,and timely removal of colorectal polyps should be found to prevent the occurrence of colon cancer.
