Correlation between Serum Procalcitonin and Immune Function in Septic Patients in Intensive Care Unit

Abstract:Objective To investigate the relationship between serum procalcitonin and immune function in sepsis patients in intensive care unit (ICU). Methods A total of 137 patients with sepsis admitted to our hospital from 2015 to 2018 were collected from ICU. According to the acute physiology and chronic health (APACHE) score, the patients were divided into low-risk group (41 cases), medium-risk group (43 cases), and high-risk group (53 cases). Then according to the immune function, each group was divided into normal subgroup and dysfunctional subgroup. The differences of procalcitonin (PCT) levels in different groups and subgroups were compared, and the correlation analysis was carried out. Results There were significant differences in APACHE score and PCT level in three groups (P<0.05), and there were also significant differences in APACHE score and PCT level among different subgroups in the same group (P<0.05). Correlation analysis showed that APACHE score and PCT level were positively correlated in different subgroups (P<0.05). Conclusion Serum PCT level can predict the early stage of immune dysfunction in patients with sepsis, and can be used as one of the early evaluation indicators in septic patients.
