A Comparative Study of Gabapentin and Carbamazepine in Treatment of Trigeminal Neuralgia
WANG Runling
Abstract:Objective To compare the clinical effects of gabapentin and carbamazepine in the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia. Methods A total of 77 patients with trigeminal neuralgia admitted to our hospital from 2015 to 2018 were randomly divided into observation group (39 cases) and control group (38 cases). The observation group was treated with gabapentin, while the control group was treated with carbamazepine. The two groups were treated for 8 weeks. The pain scores (Numeric Rating Scales, NRS) and quality of life score (Jane's Health-related Quality of Life Questionnaire-36, SF-36) were compared between two groups before and after the treatment. Results There were significant differences in the NRS scores between two groups at 2 weeks, 4 weeks, and 6 weeks (P<0.05). After 8 weeks of treatment, the scores of each item in SF-36 were significantly different between two groups (P<0.05). Conclusion Gabapentin is better than carbamazepine in pain control and quality of life improvement for treating trigeminal neuralgia, and can be as the first choice for treatment.
