Abstract：Surgical operation is the major treatment for rectal cancer,however,lateral lymph node dissection for low rectal cancer is still a controversial issue.The characteristics of lymph node drainage determines the extent of lymph node dissection.Comprehending the current status and progress of lateral lymph node dissection for rectal cancer in orient and western countries,comparing the orient and western clinical practice guidelines in lateral lymph node dissection for rectal cancer,and understanding the strategy of lateral lymph node dissection in low rectal cancer are very important.
