The interpretation of International Neural Monitoring Study Group guideline on external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve monitoring during thyroid and parathyroid surgery(version 2013)

Abstract：Intraoperative neural monitoring has the potential to be utilized for identification of the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve and functional assessment of its integrity,and contributes to patients’voice preservation. A systematic search of the MEDLINE database (from 1950 to 2013) about the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve was undertaken and supplemented by personal communication between members of the International Neural Monitoring Study Group. These guidelines are intended to improve the practice of neural monitoring of the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve during thyroidectomy or parathyroidectomy. The guideline elaborated EBSLN on the aspects of anatomical classification, pathophysiology, intraoperative protection methods and indications in detail.
